OVERVIEW
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country in Southeast Europe's Balkan Peninsula, known for its diverse population of Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats, who share a common Slavic heritage but adhere to different religions, primarily Islam, Orthodox Christianity, and Catholicism. Following its independence from Yugoslavia and a subsequent war in the early 1990s, the country is now structured into two autonomous regions—the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska—and governed under the terms of the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords, which established a complex, multi-ethnic system of government. The country features a mountainous terrain with a short coastline on the Adriatic Sea, a moderate continental climate, and a rich cultural history influenced by centuries of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule.
